Detail:
Tracey BC Spray Chamber
An Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) spray chamber is a critical component within an Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) system. It functions to remove large droplets from the aerosol generated by a nebulizer, thereby ensuring only a fine mist reaches the plasma for analysis. As a result, this improves the precision and stability of the signal produced by the ICP instrument. Essentially, it acts as a filter for the sample aerosol before it enters the plasma torch.
Spray Chamber Highlights
Function
By filtering out larger droplets, the spray chamber helps optimize the sample introduction process. Subsequently, this leads to more accurate and reliable results in elemental analysis using ICP techniques such as ICP-OES and ICP-MS.
Design Features
Different types of spray chambers exist, with popular designs including cyclonic chambers which use a swirling motion to separate large droplets from the aerosol.
Impact on Analysis
A well-chosen and properly maintained spray chamber can significantly influence the sensitivity, precision, and signal stability of an ICP analysis.
