Quartz Bonnet for Demountable Long Torch
The Role of Torch Bonnet
In an inductively coupled plasma (ICP) torch, the bonnet is a quartz component that encapsulates the output of the tubes that are inserted into the RF coil. The bonnet’s lip rests against the shield plate torch projection, and the bonnet is positioned between the torch and the work coil as part of the shield torch system. Quartz is often used for bonnets because it has a low thermal expansion coefficient and good thermodynamic properties.
The ICP torch also includes a platinum shield plate that fits over the end of the torch. The shield plate is made of platinum because it’s inert in the presence of argon at any temperature and has low chemical reactivity at high temperatures. The shield plate and bonnet should be inspected for damage, such as cracks or chips, and replaced if necessary
