RF Coil Silver 7800/7900

In an Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) system, a radio frequency (RF) coil generates plasma by passing a high-power, high-frequency electric current through the coil:

  • Creating a magnetic field: The RF current creates an intense magnetic field.
  • Ionizing argon atoms: The magnetic field accelerates electrons, which collide with argon atoms and strip off more electrons. This process continues in a chain reaction, breaking down the argon gas into ions, electrons, and argon atoms.
  • Maintaining the plasma: The RF generator provides a constant supply of energy to maintain the plasma. The RF generator and plasma frequencies synchronize to make the plasma more stable.

The RF coil in the ICP torch is made of quartz or alumina with a quartz outer tube. The condition and shape of the RF coil can affect how efficiently energy transfers to the plasma. To ensure optimal performance, replace the RF coil every 6 months for ICP-MS and every 2 years for ICP-OES.

The RF coil is the last component in the RF system of your ICP- OES and ICP-MS that generates a plasma. Therefore, the condition and shape of the RF coil have a major effect on the efficiency of transferring energy to the plasma.
