The Role of the Crossflow Argon Inlet Fitting
- Sample Introduction: The primary function of any nebulizer in ICP is to convert the liquid sample into a fine aerosol that can be introduced into the plasma for analysis. The crossflow design achieves this by utilizing a high-velocity argon gas stream impacting the liquid sample stream, causing it to break up into a mist.
- Ruggedness and Clog Resistance: Crossflow nebulizers are generally considered more rugged than concentric nebulizers, especially when dealing with samples containing higher concentrations of dissolved solids (high TDS) or particulates. Their design, with a larger diameter liquid capillary and a longer distance between the liquid and gas injectors, helps to reduce clogging issues. This robustness makes them suitable for routine analysis of samples that might otherwise cause problems for more sensitive nebulizer designs.
- Versatility: Crossflow nebulizers are versatile and can handle a variety of sample types, including strong mineral acids (like HF) and samples with moderate levels of dissolved solids (typically less than 5%, though some can handle higher). They have found wide use in diverse fields like environmental monitoring, pharmaceuticals, and food safety.
Crossflow nebulizers aren’t as efficient as concentric nebulizers in creating the smallest droplets. However, some analysts find the trade-off in sensitivity and precision to be acceptable. That is because of the improved ruggedness and reduced clogging problems. This is especially true for routine use with challenging sample matrices.
