Viton is resistant to most hydrocarbons and highly aromatic solvents. For that reason, Viton tubing is common in the chemical and petroleum industries. Unlike some products, Viton tubing keeps its mechanical and chemical resistant properties at higher heat applications. However, the useful temperature range is -40° F to +400° F.

Viton has a reputation as a high-performance elastomer that can succeed in demanding environments. In fact, Viton was introduced into the aerospace industry in 1957 due to its reliability, as UV resistance is just one of the material’s many impressive qualities.

Understanding the Characteristics of Viton

As a high-performance material, Viton is more expensive than other synthetic rubber compounds due to the manufacturing process and raw material cost. In general, Viton seals provide an indefinite seal for temperatures up to 400°F, and for temperatures up to 600°F they offer an excellent seal for more than 48 hours.

When it comes to water, working with pressure above 2,000 psi, Viton may be satisfactory for static applications. However, it’s not ideal for dynamic applications such as rotating shafts or hydraulic cylinder rod and piston seals. Knowing your application temperature is critical when selecting Viton.

Also, since Viton is a synthetic rubber, it resists many hydrocarbons, biodiesel, and petro chemicals, but is not compatible with ketones. Viton will dissolve in these chemicals. As such, never use Viton with acetone, esters, amines, organic acids, acetic acid, MEK, ethyl acetate, and other highly polar chemicals.

Applications for Viton Tubing

Viton has a reputation as a high-performance elastomer that can succeed in demanding environments. In fact, since Viton was introduced into the aerospace industry in 1957, it is highly respected for its reliability. UV resistance is just one of the material’s many impressive qualities.

Viton is frequently an important tool in appliance processing, automotive, and chemical industries. It is also common to aerospace, oil and gas, and petroleum refining and transportation industries.

In spectroscopy, Viton hoses and tubing contain and convey various fluids, fuels, and gases, often in very harsh environments. Not only is it common in seals and gaskets for chemical processing equipment, but also in tubing and hoses in various chemical transfer applications.
