Why is Copper Foil for Torches Important in ICP?

Copper Foil for Torches in ICP (Inductively Coupled Plasma) torches plays an important role. Copper foil creates a coil that couples with a radio frequency (RF) generator to produce the plasma. Using this method, the copper coil, also known as a load coil, is a critical component for generating high-temperature plasma. This plasma excites and ionizes the sample.  The same is true in both ICP-MS (Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry) and ICP-OES (Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry).

Here’s a more detailed explanation:

  1. Plasma Generation: First, the RF generator sends a high-frequency current through the copper coil. As a result, this process induces a magnetic field around the torch’s central tube.
  2. Argon Introduction: Next, add an inert gas like argon to the torch. It flows through the coil, and the oscillating magnetic field causes the argon atoms to become ionized and form a plasma.
  3. Sample Introduction: Then, the sample, typically in liquid or solution form, goes into the plasma.
  4. Excitation and Ionization: The high temperature of the plasma excites the atoms in the sample, causing them to jump to higher energy levels. As a result, when these atoms return to their ground state, they emit light at specific wavelengths. The instrument (ICP-OES) measures the light. Alternately, the operator can ionize the sample atoms and measure them with a mass spectrometer (ICP-MS).
  5. Cooling: Finally, the copper coil, and sometimes the entire torch, are water-cooled. This prevents overheating and damage from the intense heat of the plasma.
In essence, the copper foil, in the form of a coil, acts as the interface between the RF generator and the plasma. By doing so it enables the creation of the high-temperature environment necessary for analysis.
